About our Work
For the 2016 re-launch of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, McGregor unveiled a trophy that captures the raw energy, legacy, and poetic swagger of hip hop culture in a single, unforgettable object. Sculpted in molten gold, the award reimagines the iconic handheld microphone—hip hop’s most powerful instrument—as if it is literally “melting the mic,” a phrase synonymous with delivering a performance so fierce it leaves the stage scorched. The microphone’s fluid, liquid-metal stem cascades seamlessly into a rippling pool of gold, spilling over the edge of a classic marble pedestal in an impossibly smooth, high-polish flow. This tension between solid and fluid, icon and alchemy, speaks to McGregor’s sculptural design sensibilities and his fascination with pieces that appear to hover between states of matter. Precision-machined metallic surfaces, lustrous gold finishes, and the grounding weight of honed marble elevate the trophy into a luxury artifact—one that is both reverent and rebellious. The result is an award that doesn’t simply commemorate achievement; it embodies the heat, innovation, and transformative force of hip hop itself.
