Sculpted in molten gold, the award reimagines the iconic handheld microphone—hip hop’s most powerful instrument—as if it is literally “melting the mic,” a phrase synonymous with delivering a performance so fierce it leaves the stage scorched. The microphone’s fluid, liquid-metal stem cascades seamlessly into a rippling pool of gold, spilling over the edge of a classic marble pedestal in an impossibly smooth, high-polish flow. This tension between solid and fluid, icon and alchemy, speaks to McGregor’s sculptural design sensibilities and his fascination with pieces that appear to hover between states of matter.
